How To Declutter Your Home

Updated: May 12, 2022

Clutter will not sell your home. It stops buyers from seeing the true potential of the space. 90% of buyers can't imagine themselves living in a home when it's vacant or cluttered.

Clutter can include:

- Personal photo frames

- Ornaments and trinkets

- Bags, shoes, hats, or jackets left at the front door

- Any pets items such as beds, bowls, cat scratchers and toys

- Childrens toys (simple toys are okay but less is best)

- Pots, cups, plates and appliances on the kitchen bench

- Toothbrushes, deodorants and shower bottles throughout the bathroom

- Magazines, remote controls, DVD's and cords in the lounge room

- Some pot plants, gardening tools or scrap items left around the yard

The list could go on and on. It's essentially any 'stuff' that isn't there for a reason or placed there with purpose.

Use these tips to get rid of clutter:

- Sort unwanted items into 'Keep, Sell, Donate or Throw' boxes. This'll help you make easy decisions on what to do with certain things.

- It's going to be too big of a task to do all in one day. So break it up into a number of weekends and target a different room each time. This will make it more manageable.

- Be brutal. Don't think about who bought it for you, how much it cost or the next time you might want to look at it in 5 years time. My rule of thumb is, if you haven't worn, used or looked at it in the past 12 months, it's time for a change.

- Look for items that can be salvaged. You might have an old timber dresser that can be sanded back and painted. Or maybe your mustard coloured vases or glassware have come back into style.

- Place items neatly away into their designated spot. Buyers look in cupboards. We know they do! So shoving it all in the cupboard won't solve your problem.

- Buy some cheap and stylish jars, containers, trays and baskets to help organise bits and pieces lying around that don't have a home yet.
