Often confused with modern design, contemporary style is ever-evolving and reflects current trends. What’s considered contemporary today might look very different five years from now.

Contemporary interior design style trends are currently featuring:

  • Neutral, earthy tones such as natural or off-white, cream and beige as opposed to crisp, stark white

  • Large, abstract wall art as the focal point of a space, often with a pop of bright color

  • Layering of luxury textures and decor accessories such as boucle, velvet, leather and linens

  • A shift to more sustainable, eco-friendly materials such as reclaimed wood, recycled fabrics and low-VOC paint

  • Smart home integrations and appliances for greater energy efficiency and seamless design choices that take away the added pressures of day to day life

  • We are seeing more soft-edge, rustic finishes as opposed to sharp, clean edges, through the use of rendered interior walls, natural exterior materials such as stone brought inside, slightly rounding countertops, and opting for softer, brushed surfaces including fixtures and fittings

Contemporary style often blends indoor and outdoor living and embraces trending shapes like curves and arches. Variations include contemporary coastal, contemporary boho, and contemporary minimalist.

Minimalist

Minimalist design is all about simplicity, function, and clean lines. This interior style strips back to the essentials and is defined by:

  • A neutral monochrome palette (white, grey, black)

  • Clean-lined furniture with a purpose

  • Strategic lighting to add warmth and depth

  • A calming, uncluttered atmosphere

Minimalism interior design draws inspiration from Scandinavian and modern design and can be combined with virtually any other style. The 2025 trends we're seeing with minimalism are much softer edges compared to previous years of hard, sharp finishes. It has a much warmer, welcoming vibe which we're totally here for.

Boho (Bohemian)

Boho interiors are warm, relaxed, and culturally rich. They celebrate individuality through layers of texture and storytelling objects.

Signature boho interior style elements in 2025 include:

  • Imperfect rattan, jute, macramé and ceramics - bonus if it's handmade!

  • Vintage or travel-inspired decor displayed intentionally, almost as a work of art or a tribute to memories and experiences

  • Layering indoor plants at varying heights and using mix-matched stands, baskets and shelves

  • Big character occasional chairs and oversized, fluffy, layered cushions

Boho Luxe and Boho Coastal are modern hybrid styles that elevate the boho look with high-end materials and refined accents.

Coastal

The modern coastal style has moved away from obvious beach themes. Today, it’s more about relaxed luxury and subtle seaside references using soft blues and greens.

Coastal interior design style trends feature:

  • A light, neutral color palette inspired by nature, sand, sea, and sky

  • Natural timber, often raw and rustic, 100% linen fabrics, jute rugs, and cane accents

  • Photographic or abstract ocean-themed artwork

  • Bursts of green through the use of indoor plants to break up the neutral tones

  • Statement pendant lighting using natural materials such as cane or timber

  • A focus towards the outdoors with sunlight flooding in, a gentle breeze and open windows towards a nature outlook

Coastal interior design blends well with contemporary and Scandinavian styles for a fresh, elegant vibe.

Provincial Style

The Provincial interior design style is elegant, timeless, and influenced by French country interiors. Think classic charm and fine craftsmanship. In 2025 the provincial style is still prevalent and give off high end, relaxed luxury.

Classic trends of this interior style today feature:

  • Soft, carved furniture with curves and detailing

  • Library style bookshelves for a striking and inviting feature wall

  • Natural stone, brick, and aged metals like gold trim

  • Textured, high-quality fabrics like velvet and linen

  • A calming palette of whites, greys, soft blues, and greens

Provincial interiors can also pair beautifully with coastal or industrial elements for a modern twist.

I just had to include the Modern Farmhouse interior design style. I think most people adore this style and secretly wish they could move out to the country for more simpler way of living. Thankfully this style is so versatile that you could easily integrate it into their home!

The modern farmhouse interior style blends the rustic charm of traditional country homes with contemporary updates for a fresh, refined and homely, lived-in look.

Classic farmhouse interior characteristics in 2025:

  • Neutral color pallet utilizing soft, muted tones like warm whites, cream, grey and taupe, accented with black or bronze for contrast

  • Natural, raw wood finishes on barn-style doors, shiplap walls and exposed ceiling beams. Smooth finish, polished timbers dominate the horizontal surfaces like flooring and counter tops

  • Blend of old and new vintage antique furniture pieces pared with sleek, modern elements. This includes plenty of feature lighting to add to the warm ambiance

  • Industrial touches of metal accents used in lighting, hardware and structural features

  • Comfort-focused furniture with slipcovers, linen, plush sofas and bedding. Think layering textures with cotton and chunky knits for a cozy, lived-in vibe

  • Functional and open-air feel creating communal spaces for family to gather where everything is handmade and has it's purpose

The modern farmhouse interior style is so versatile and pairs well with styles like industrial, coastal and provincial.

Mid-Century Modern Style

The Mid-century modern interior style is a nod to 1940s–70s design, featuring clean lines, bold patterns, and a love for natural materials.

2025 Interior style trend features include:

  • Lots of timber features as always with panel walls, antique feature furniture pieces and timber cabinetry

  • Colorful checkerboard mosaic tile used as kitchen splash-backs or throughout bathrooms and laundry rooms

  • Iconic low-lying, wide, angled-leg mid-century furniture made from quality materials like walnut timber, rough textured fabrics such as barkcloth, boucle and leather

  • Pops of retro color like mustard, teal, green, burnt orange, yellow and deep blue

  • Statement lighting and art

Fusion styles like mid-century boho or mid-century eclectic offer fresh takes on this classic style.

Industrial

Industrial interior design style showcases raw materials and structural elements, think warehouse conversions or loft apartments. They usually feature exposed utilities, souring ceilings or voids filled with natural light from high windows.

Industrial style key trends:

  • Entire wall of exposed brick, polished concrete floors, metal beams, and exposed plumbing

  • Solid furniture pieces built from metal and finished with hard-waring materials such as leather and heavy cotton weave fabric

  • Abstract art displayed at varying heights and frame styles with oversized industrial lighting

  • Neutral palettes with layered texture and the occasional bold pop of color

Modern industrial design is softer and more luxurious than earlier versions, often blended with mid-century, minimalist, or luxe styles.

Scandinavian (Scandi)

Scandinavian interior design style is known for its bright, functional, yet cozy and inviting aesthetic.

This years Scandi trends feature:

  • White base with natural textures like light timbers, wool, fur and linen mixed with black accents

  • Statement pendant lighting for warm, moody vibes

  • Clean lines mixed with warmth and softness

  • A focus on form, light, and simplicity with a quirky, collective edge

Newer trends include darker color palettes and black features for a moody take on Scandinavian minimalism. In my opinion, Scandi is a balanced blend of all the interior styles combined.

Luxe

Luxe interior design style scream sophistication, layering texture, pattern, and the finest materials to create glamorous, curated spaces.

What defines luxe style today?

  • Custom furnishings and built-ins

  • Designer wallpaper and rare natural stones such as marble or terrazzo

  • Luxe is versatile with the use of either crisp neutrals or bold colors and pattern choices... or combination of both!

  • Finishes of brass, gold, and mirrored accents

  • Plush, richly textured fabrics intentionally placed

Popular hybrid styles include boho luxe, coastal luxe, and luxe eclectic.

Eclectic Style

The eclectic interior design style in 2025 is all about color drenching, and mixing and matching with confidence. It's a celebration of color, contrast, texture and personality.

Trending eclectic interiors feature:

  • Color drenching entire rooms by saturating the walls, trim and ceiling with the same color, including furniture and decor

  • Reclaimed or repurposed items. This could be a reupholstered lounge chair, painting an old cabinet, giving a vintage lamp a second life or sourcing unique second-hand picture frames

  • A balance of old and new, raw and refined giving character and life to a room

  • Unusual pairings that somehow work together cohesively

  • A layered, collective look

Tips for success: Use repetition (shapes, colors, or textures) to tie everything together but avoid visual chaos. For more glamour, try a luxe eclectic approach.
