4 Ways To Style A Bed

If you're styling a property or just want to improve the overall look and feel of your bedroom each day, give these different styles a try. Wash the sheets, plump the pillows and style the room and side tables.

For most of these looks, to style your quilt, start with the bottom end and make sure it covers the mattress first. With the excess up the top end, you want to have it folded down about a 1/4 of the way down the bed. Fold a small section of the end over first, then make a larger fold to create a puffy, comfortable look and to hide any seams.

Prim & Proper

- 2 x european cushions vertical at the back

- 2 x sets of standard pillows vertically in different tones (one the same colour or similar to the quilt cover, one the same or similar as the sheets)

- 2 x vertical square cushions

- 1 x vertical long cushion

- Throw neatly flat along the edge

This style creates a neat, clean and firm appearance on the bed. It could be used for styling a luxurious master bedroom or a guest bedroom. The key to achieving this look is to ensure all pillows are directly upright and not on any angle.

Textured

- 1 x european cushion on left, vertical at the back

- 1 x standard pillow on right, vertical, at the back (same colour as sheets)

- 2 x standard pillows on left, laid flat, one on top of the other in different tones

- 1 x vertical european cushion on right

- 1 x vertical standard pillow on right (same colour as quilt)

- 2 x vertical square cushions

- 1 x vertical long cushion

- Throw laid casually over the corner

To add texture and variety into the room, try this style. It still looks neat but provides another dynamic to the bed spread. This look would be great for both the master or a kids room. You don't need to be too careful here.

Shapes

- 2 x sets of standard pillows vertically at the back in different tones

- 2 x vertical, chopped european cushions

- 2 x vertical, copped square cushions

- Throw casually laid along the bottom

This one's simple. We're just keeping common shapes together to achieve a symmetrical yet dynamic look. Great for a guest bedroom. To create a 'chopped' pillow, the technique is as it sounds - plump up the pillow first and simple karate chop the top right in the middle. It'll create a 'v' and give you nice pointy corners.

Casual Character

- 2 x european cushions vertical at the back

- 2 x sets of standard pillows angled edges up in the middle (swap the colours around to break up the colour of the quilt)

- 3 x square cushions in different colours and on various angles in front

- Throw laid wrinkled over the corner

Relaxed, comfy and quirky, this casual, lived-in look is easy to throw together while the bed still looks made. It's a 'neat-messy' so if you're someone who doesn't usually make your bed or doesn't like things too pristine, this one's for you. For this style, we've pulled out a corner of the quilt to create a 'just got up' look. To help keep this style still looking neat, pull on the corners of the pillows to keep the square.

How NOT To Make A Bed

You can see the obvious difference. You'd be surprised how often stylists and real estate agents walk into properties and this is what the beds looks like - Dirty and slept in. These are the common mistakes here:

- Sheets are wrinkles, not clean, showing and aren't tucked in tight

- Only 2 flat standard pillows with no styling or variety

- Quilt is messy and looks like someone woke up in a hurry

- Pillows are laid flat or on an angle making it look dull

- Side lamps aren't on making it look cold and lifeless
